Decision Fatigue

Ever heard of decision fatigue?  I am not surprised.  Neither have I until listening to over 1,000 podcasts and audiobooks in 2020. And I also learned about why so many successful people wear the same clothes over and over again.  Turns out, cutting out having to think about what to wear every day saves brainpower!  HA!  Who would have thought?

There’s a smart strategy on why a lot of successful people wear the same outfit every day. The first in line here would be the entrepreneurs who wanted to be more productive. People have more than a hundred decisions per day. By the time they wake up, there will be questions that will pop up in your mind. What to eat for breakfast, what time you should leave for work, should you exercise, and a lot more. Some may be important decisions, but some, just trivial.

But studies show that human’s capacity to decide is limited. Meaning, if we have used our ability to decide early in a day, we’ll consequently have less of it later that day. This is called Decision fatigue which is a psychological condition. It is when making a decision in the present will reduce our decision-making ability in the future.

You need to focus your decision-making energy. You need to routinize yourself. You can’t be going through the day distracted by trivia.

Here are some reasons why successful people wear the same clothes every day.

  1. It Saves Time – You’ll waste less time if you know what you’ll be wearing, rather than spending time deciding. It also saves your time shopping, because you know what you’re looking for and can get it as soon as you enter the store.
  2. You’ll save Brainpower – When you wear the same outfit every day, you don’t have to waste time deciding what to wear first thing in the morning. Save your brainpower for more important decisions later in the day.
  3. It’s Simple –  Consider it a method to wear your distinct style all the time. It would be better than feeling confined by the idea of choosing a uniform. Your signature style is entirely up to you, and it can be as mundane or as distinctive as you like. Simply create your own uniform. Stock up on your favorite items for each workday. And organize your closet accordingly.
  4. It Saves Money – You may always have a few extra pieces of your choice put aside for a rainy day. That would be by stocking up while they’re on sale if you know what you wear on a daily basis.
  5. It Boosts Confidence and Increases Focus – You’ll be able to focus more on your work and be a better team member. That’s how you will do if you know what clothes work for you and your body type. There’s no reason to wear ill-fitting clothes. Because you bought them on the spur of the moment because they were on sale. Or because they were the only clean clothing you had that morning.
  6. It’s Predictable – At the very least, we’ll have the security of knowing what our daily uniform will be. We are “ready to go” with little effort or thinking.
  7. Stay Focused At Work Easily And Get Things Done Fast – You’ll be more productive because your focus is on your work and not your clothes.
